Start your journey to better health by practising the Ayurvedic way of living.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of healing that originated over 5000 years ago in India. In Sanskrit, 'Ayu' means life or living, and 'Veda' means knowledge, so Ayurveda has been defined as the knowledge of life and the science of longevity. Ayurveda makes use of a variety of remedies such as detoxification techniques, herbal and mineral remedies, yoga, meditation and massage therapy. This Ayurvedic tradition is widely practised in modern India and has been steadily gaining followers in the west.

In Ayurveda, there are five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. These elements conglomerate within the human body to form the three Doshas or basic physiological principles that govern all bodily functions. The three doshas are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person has a unique blend of these Doshas, known as a person’s Prakriti or constitution, which is why Ayurvedic treatment is always individualised. In Ayurveda, disease is viewed as a state of imbalance in one or more Doshas within an individual.

The Vata Dosha is associated with air and space, and promotes movement and lightness in the body. Vata people are generally thin and light physically, dry-skinned and very energetic and mentally restless. When the Vata is out of balance it may result in nervous problems, hyperactivity, sleeplessness, lower back pains and headaches.

The Pitta is associated with fire and water, and in the body is responsible for metabolism and digestion. Pitta characteristics are medium-build, fair skin, strong digestion and good mental concentration. A Pitta imbalance often manifests itself as anger and aggression and stress-related conditions like gastritis, ulcers, liver problems, hypertension etc.

The Kapha Dosha is associated with water and earth. This Dosha maintains body resistance. People characterised as Kapha are generally well built and have oily complexions. They tend to be calm and peaceful. Kapha disorders manifest emotionally as greed and possessiveness and physically as obesity, fatigue, bronchitis and sinus problems.

Today's fast-paced world causes much stress and tension, which in turn cause imbalances in our Doshas. These Dosha imbalances can result in a variety of diseases that can only be healed by treating from within and striking the eternal balance of total health. At Shymala Ayurveda, we care for you by caring for your health.
